The challenges

What retail teams are up against

Retail relies on a largely part-time workforce, trades long hours and seasonal peaks, and faces persistent abuse of shop staff. Labour cost has to follow trading, week by week, store by store.

  1. 01

A part-time workforce built around peaks

Part-time staff fill more than half of retail jobs, and large retailers recruit thousands of temporary staff for Christmas. Rotas have to follow footfall, cover every opening hour and flex for peaks without overspending.

  2. 02

    New rules on shift notice

The Employment Rights Act 2025 will require reasonable notice of shifts, and payment when shifts are cancelled or cut short at short notice, expected to start in 2027 once regulations set the detail. Late rota changes will carry a cost.

  3. 03

Abuse and violence against shop staff

BRC crime surveys record well over a thousand incidents of violence and abuse against shopworkers a day, and the Crime and Policing Act 2026 creates an offence of assaulting a retail worker, due to start by regulations. Staff opening or closing alone are among the most exposed.

  4. 04

Stores full of customers in an emergency

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires a fire risk assessment and evacuation plan for every store, and shops and centres where 200 or more people may be present fall within Martyn’s Law. You need to know which staff are on the floor.

RotaOne

RotaOne for stores and warehouses

Plan every store and warehouse in one system, publish rotas straight to staff phones and see planned against actual costs as the week runs. Every feature is included, at one price.

RotaOne time and attendance software illustrated on a laptop, tablet and desktop: reports, a team member clocked in, and the weekly rota
  • Rotas that follow trading

Build regular shift patterns in seconds, add ad-hoc shifts for busy days and drag and drop to fill gaps. Set staffing budgets and review planned against actual costs, store by store, before the week is out.

  • Changes in staff hands

Publish rotas through the self-service app, where staff see unfilled shifts, pick up extra hours and request holiday. Employees can only request the leave they are entitled to, within the allowances you set.

  • No timesheets to read

Staff clock in on facial recognition, fingerprint or RFID devices, or on the app with their location recorded by GPS. Hours from every branch feed payroll exports, with nothing to key in by hand.

  • Labour cost by store

Compare planned and actual labour costs and hours for each store, department or the whole business, and forecast future costs ahead of seasonal peaks. Custom payroll reports take seconds.

The RotaOne features that matter most

Musterd roll call and evacuation app illustrated on two smartphones: the live list of who is safe, and the site map with zones
Musterd

Musterd for shops, centres and warehouses

When a store is evacuated, your team leaves among customers and your fire marshals need a clear list. Musterd shows who is safe and who is UNSAFE, live, on any phone or tablet.

  • Know who is still inside

Musterd starts from who is on site, so marshals see straight away who is safe, who is UNSAFE and their last known location, from the shop floor to the stockroom and the warehouse.

  • Every store, one view

Run roll calls across stores, distribution centres and head office, with each muster point given its own team. Area managers and head office can follow an incident remotely as it happens.

  • Ready for Martyn’s Law

Stores and centres where 200 or more people may be present fall within the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, with an enhanced tier from 800. Post-event reports from every drill help you evidence your procedures.
