Shift cover and safety for energy and utilities

Energy and utility networks never close, and their people work in control rooms, plants and remote sites at every hour. RotaOne keeps round-the-clock cover and working time in order, and Musterd shows who is safe on every site the moment an alarm sounds.

Why Thinking Software

Software shaped for continuous operations

Generation plants, treatment works, depots and control rooms all share a way of working: continuous shift patterns, standby rotas, engineers who start the day miles from the nearest office, and sites where an emergency must be handled at any hour.

  • Software for round-the-clock, call-out workforces since 1994
  • RotaOne and Musterd share the same clocking data
  • The record of who is working is your roll call in an emergency
The challenges

What keeps energy and utility operators busy

Keeping power, gas and water flowing means covering every hour, sending people to remote places and planning for emergencies that must never be improvised. These are the challenges operators raise most.

  1. 01

Cover and rest on continuous shifts

Continuous shifts and call-outs must respect the Working Time Regulations 1998: an average 48-hour week unless a worker opts out, 11 hours’ rest between working days, and an average of 8 hours in 24 for night workers.

  2. 02

    Engineers working alone

Field engineers and operatives often work alone at substations, pumping stations and customer premises. HSE guidance says employers must assess the risks to lone workers and have ways of monitoring and keeping in touch with them.

  3. 03

    Major hazard emergency plans

Upper-tier sites under the COMAH Regulations 2015 need emergency plans that are reviewed and tested at least every three years. A tested plan depends on knowing exactly who was on site when the alarm was raised.

  4. 04

    An ageing, hard-to-replace workforce

Energy & Utility Skills has long warned of an ageing workforce and hard-to-fill vacancies across the sector. Experienced people need to be scheduled well, and their qualifications kept current.

RotaOne

RotaOne: continuous cover without the guesswork

RotaOne plans continuous and standby patterns, records clockings from devices or the app, and gives you accurate hours for payroll. One app, one price, with every feature included across all your sites.

RotaOne time and attendance software illustrated on a laptop, tablet and desktop: reports, a team member clocked in, and the weekly rota
  • Continuous patterns, automated

Build rotating shift patterns once and roll them forward automatically, with minimum staffing levels for key personnel so control rooms and plants are never left short.

  • Clock in from wherever the job is

Field teams clock in remotely from the app, with the location recorded by GPS, so you know when and where each engineer started work, even at an unstaffed site.

  • Competence tracked with expiry dates

Record each employee’s skills and qualifications with expiry dates and get under-staffing alerts, so the people on shift hold the authorisations the work demands.

  • Call-out and overtime costs in view

Compare planned and actual hours and labour costs by person or department, forecast future costs, and send pre-calculated payroll exports with overtime already in.

The RotaOne features that matter most

Musterd

Musterd: roll call for plants, works and remote sites

Musterd shows who is on site, who is off site and who is missing, on smartphones, tablets or specialist devices. It is built for real emergencies, including darkness, smoke and bad weather.

  • Find people on sprawling sites

what3words locations and responder location tracking pinpoint marshals and missing people across large plants, treatment works and remote sites where there is no address to give.

  • Works when conditions are worst

Musterd is designed to work in poor visibility, so a roll call at night, in heavy rain or during a power failure is as clear as one in daylight.

  • Evidence for every exercise

Post-event compliance reports record who was accounted for and when, giving you evidence for emergency plan tests, while remote incident oversight lets duty managers follow events from anywhere.
