Night shifts have legal limits
Under the Working Time Regulations 1998, night workers’ normal hours should average no more than eight in each 24, with a strict eight-hour limit where the work is hazardous or heavy. Night workers must also be offered free health assessments.

Overtime changes holiday pay
Regular overtime must be reflected in holiday pay, and for leave years from 1 April 2024 irregular-hours workers accrue holiday at 12.07% of hours worked. Getting both right depends on accurate records of every hour.

Agency cover needs tracking
Agency workers gain the right to the same pay and holiday as your own staff after 12 weeks in the same role. When agency labour fills shifts, you need to know who has worked where, and for how long.

Large sites, real hazards
Factories can hold combustible dusts, flammable materials and moving plant, and DSEAR requires explosion risks to be assessed and controlled. When the alarm sounds across a large site, you need to know who is on shift and who is missing.

Record each operator’s skills and qualifications with expiry dates, set minimum staffing levels for key roles and receive under-staffing alerts before a line is left short.

Clocking devices at the gate
