The challenges

The hazards and hours of waste work

Waste and recycling is one of the UK’s most dangerous industries, and much of the work starts before dawn. Rounds, crews and site shifts all have to be planned, recorded and kept safe.

  1. 01

    A high-risk industry

HSE statistics put the waste and recycling fatal injury rate at many times the all-industry average, with being struck by a moving vehicle a leading cause.

  2. 02

Rounds, task and finish and fatigue

Many collection crews work early starts under task and finish arrangements. HSE’s guidance on safe collection services covers managing task and finish to reduce safety risks, so hours need to be recorded, not assumed.

  3. 03

    Drivers under different rules

Vehicles used for door-to-door household refuse collection are exempt from the retained EU drivers’ hours rules, so those drivers come under GB domestic rules instead. Bulk haulage between sites is not exempt, so one fleet can run under two regimes.

  4. 04

    Fires and evacuations on site

Battery fires at waste sites and in collection vehicles have risen sharply, and Environmental Services Association members link more than a third of fires at their sites to lithium-ion batteries. Sites must be able to account for everyone fast.

RotaOne

RotaOne for crews, rounds and sites

Plan collection rounds and site shifts in one system, clock crews in at the depot or on the app, and send hours to payroll without timesheets. One price, with every feature included.

  • Crews planned to the round

Build regular shift patterns for each round and site, set minimum staffing levels so every crew has its key people, and receive under-staffing alerts when absence leaves a gap.

  • Hours recorded, not assumed

Crews clock in and out on facial recognition, fingerprint or RFID devices at the depot, or on the app with their location recorded by GPS, so the hours actually worked on each round are on the record.

  • Licences and training in date

Record each employee’s skills and qualifications, from driving licences to plant training, with expiry dates, so every vehicle and machine is run by someone trained for it.

  • Overtime and pay, accurately

Overtime, absence and enhanced hours flow into payroll exports pre-calculated from real-time data, and payroll reports compare planned and actual labour costs by person or department.

The RotaOne features that matter most

Musterd roll call and evacuation app illustrated on two smartphones: the live list of who is safe, and the site map with zones
Musterd

Musterd for depots and recycling sites

A fire at a transfer station or recycling plant leaves no time to check paper lists. Musterd shows who is safe and who is UNSAFE in real time, with locations, across every site you run.

  • Unsafe zones on the site map

Interactive site maps show unsafe zones, from the tipping hall to the baling area and yard, alongside the last known location of anyone still unaccounted for.

  • Works outdoors, in all conditions

Musterd works in the dark and in bad weather on smartphones, tablets and specialist devices, and uses what3words to pinpoint locations on large, open sites.

  • Records for every incident

Post-event compliance reports record each drill and evacuation across depots and sites, giving you evidence for your fire risk assessment and a clear basis for review after a real event.
